We know we should read the Bible everyday. We know we feel better when we do. But let’s be honest. It’s hard. Life is challenging. Life is busy. Kids need us. We work hard all day- whether you work outside the home or manage your home- it’s hard work. We shuttle people around, and feel exhausted. Dinner and bedtime is challenging, and if you have to deal with homework or any extra activities, you are wiped out. Even if we have the best intentions of getting to our devotional once the house is settled for the night, we usually fall asleep doing it.

But when we do get to our devotional, and get it completed, we feel fulfilled. We feel better. We deserve to feed ourselves spiritually.

When I was contacted about whether I would be interested in reviewing this ESV Family Devotional Bible, I knew it would be worth checking out. My 9 year old really likes to read and having something that allows the kids to get involved and for us to do devotions together is a significant bonus to this.

The description of the product I was provided is listed below.

The ESV FAMILY DEVOTIONAL BIBLE is a hardbound colorful Bible.  It retells 130 key stories from the Bible with full color illustrations for each story, as well as placed within the Bible text where it is found.  The stories are simplified and easy for children of all ages to understand.

The ESV Family Devotional Bible is designed to help families read and apply God’s Word together. This full-color edition features the complete ESV text interspersed with engaging illustrations and gospel-centered devotions related to key Bible stories—guiding families through the entirety of God’s Word over the course of a year. Each devotion also includes discussion questions and suggestions for additional reading, helping families develop a habit of reading theBible together and applying its truth to all of life.

Our experience was very light. I broke it out and let my 9 year old take a look at it and flip through it. The kids all loved the colored pictures, sidebar- they love Bible story apps on my phone, so this was a bonus. We read a story together, which is nice to have some family time, and enjoy a relaxed pace. My oldest was able to read the story with some help, and then the littlest wanted to read it to, and basically gave us a recap using just the pictures.

  1. It’s hard sometimes to read the Bible. We get busy and put other things before reading the Bible. Chris and I have been wanting to get a devotional but have not done it yet.
